SOUTHERN CROSS

The town of Southern Cross sprang up over a four year period of spectacular growth caused by the discovery of gold in the area in 1888.

The early prospectors used Huntís Track and wells.

Southern Cross became the railhead of the eastern goldfields and, later, an important regional farming centre.  Today, gold mining is still important to the livelihood of the town.

The Southern Cross, a constellation in the southern heavens, was first officially segregated and named Crux by the astronomer Royer in 1679.  It was, however, well known as a star group many centuries earlier.
