Rossiter Bay is named after Captain Thomas Rossiter, the English captain of the French whaling ship Mississippi.

Rossiter gave assistance to explorer Edward John Eyre and his aboriginal companion Wylie, who were desperately short of provisions after their epic struggle across the Great Australian Bight from Fowlers Bay, when they sighted the ship at anchor in Thistle Cove in June 1841.

It was shown as Rossiter Harbour by surveyor C. D. Price during surveys of the East West Telegraph Line  in 1876/77.
