The Ridge Walk

The Ridge Walk from Ellen Peak to Bluff Knoll in the Stirling Ranges is the pinnacle of what the Great Southern in Western Australia has to offer. It is rated as one of Australia’s most challenging wilderness hikes.

The Stirling Ranges’ Ridge Walk covers 15.5 kilometres between Ellen Peak and Bluff Knoll. The rugged nature of the track, changeable weather conditions and lack of water sources make it suitable only for experienced, well prepared, fit and agile hikers. Most people allow four days to cover the distance.

It is the only hike in Western Australia featuring alpine weather conditions.

I tackled The Ridge Walk with two others in early December. The temperature on the first day’s walk reached 40+oC. The altitude compensated little. The hoped-for water barrel part way along the Walk was non-existent. Our situation was potentially hazardous and necessitated a bug out before Bluff Knoll, late on day two.
