Gascoyne River

The Gascoyne River has three branches of which the longest is the Gascoyne River (North). The branches all join on Three Rivers Station.

The source of the Gascoyne North is 14 kilometres north-east of Kumarina Roadhouse at 24° 38′ 28.53″ S, 119° 43′ 12.08″

The length of the Gascoyne River is 850 kilometres – making it Australia’s 10th longest river and the longest river in Western Australia.

It was named by Lieutenant George Grey in 1839 during a planned voyage of exploration that turned disastrous when one his boats and most of his stores were lost in a storm. He named the river after his friend Captain John Gascoyne RN, son of Bamber Gascoyne, a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty.
