Lachlan River

The source of the Lachlan River is on the Breadalbane Plain near Goulburn, NSW at 34°46’6.6″S 149°26’25.1″E.  From here the river flows 256 kilometres to the Mid Western Highway Bridge at Cowra 33° 50′ 3.5″ S, 148° 41′ 2.7″ E.

Condobolin, considered to be the centre of New South Wales, is located on the Lachlan River, 634 kilometres downriver from the source.

To the Cobb Highway Bridge at Booligal 33° 51′ 44.8″ S, 144° 53′ 7.1″ E is a further 354 kilometres downriver. Between this point and the Murrumbidgee River is considered to be the Lower Lachlan.

The river runs 309 kilometres from Booligal to its terminus at the Murrumbidgee River.

While measurement extends to the Murrumbidgee River, the upriver edge of the Great Cumbungi Swamp is effectively the end of the river and, further, the uncertainty of the river’s course through the Great Cumbungi Swamp adds a degree of variability to measurements.

Fallen trees, logs and vegetation make the river nearly impassable between Booligal and Oxley. Coupled with the difficulty of navigating the Great Cumbungi Swamp, tackling the Lower Lachlan is suitable only for the experienced and well prepared.

The river flows 1553 kilometres from its source to the confluence with the Murrumbidgee River, making it Australia’s fourth longest river
