The source of the Murray River is Indi Springs, Cowombat Flat, Snowy Mountains, New South Wales. Indi Springs is at 36° 47′ 46.5″ S, 148° 11′ 41.8″ E. *
Parts of the river along the 138 kilometres downriver to Bringenbrong Bridge are considered unnavigable and require portage. *
Bringenbrong Bridge is the accepted start point for paddling/kayaking expeditions (particularly records). *
Hume Dam, a further 187 kilometres downriver is the accepted start point for power craft expeditions.
The confluence with the Murrumbidgee River, Australia’s third longest river is a further 939 kilometres downriver – near Boundary Bend. This meeting of these two rivers is 1264 kilometres from the Murray’s source.
The Murray’s confluence with the Darling River (Australia’s longest river) is at Wentworth, NSW. From this point the river flows a further 831 kilometres to its mouth at the Southern Ocean in South Australia.
This is a total of 2468 kilometres making it Australia’s second longest river (after the Darling at 3084 kilometres). Although this ranking (Darling vis a vis Darling) is not universally accepted the measured distances of the two rivers are indisputable.
