As the name indicates this road starts in Carnarvon and connects with Mullewa 450 kilometres to the south-south-east, The road itself is a little longer at 662 kilometres.
Time Sensitive Information
About 50% of the 162 kilometres between Carnarvon and Gascoyne Junction is sealed. It is gravel (unsealed) for 300 kilometres from Gascoyne Junction to Murchison. The 200 kilometres from Murchison south to Mullewa is mostly sealed. Over time, more of the road will be sealed and these distances will change.
Route and Conditions
The CMR is an easy drive but it is remote and conditions can be extreme in summer.
The track passes through Murchison Settlement and the Oasis Roadhouse here is the only refuel opportunity on the drive south of Gascoyne Junction. There are a number of little-known and very much under-rated attractions and features along the CMR including Bilung Pool, Wooramel River Gorges, Pioneer Well 19, and Erabiddy Bluff.
The CMR crosses the Murchison River south of the Murchison Settlement on the new (2016) Ballinyoo Bridge. Until the original bridge was replaced in 2016 it was the oldest concrete bridge in Western Australia.
Extent
The western terminus of the Carnarvon Mullewa Road is where it intersects with the North West Coastal Highway. Its southern terminus is its intersection with the Geraldton-Mount Magnet Road. It is Western Australia’s fifth longest road.
