A primate city is one whose population is more than twice that of the country’s second most populous city.

In 2000 Bangkok was 40 times larger than the second largest city of that time, Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) and was considered ‘the most primate city on Earth’. As of 2022, Bangkok is only nine times larger than the current second largest city – Chiang Mai.
