Matthew Flinders named Thistle Cove on 11 January 1802 after John Thistle, Shipmaster who was sent to examine the cove while Flinder’s ship HMS Investigator lay at anchor in Lucky Bay to the east.
Thistle reported that the cove had two points of fresh water and was a superior anchorage to Lucky Bay both of which are to the east of Cape Le Grand.
Thistle drowned at Memory Cove in South Australia just six weeks later when his boat capsized.
