The access track for the abandoned Greenbushes Railway provides an interesting exit north from Bridgetown.
It’s important to start (and remain) on the east side of the railway.
The abandoned railway leads to Hester. It’s an easy track with a few bogholes that may cause issues in the wet.
While the abandoned railway continues to Greenbushes the route to Burekup veers away at this point. Dirt/gravel roads lead from Catterick towards Grimwade. The route crosses Greenbushes-Boyup Brook Road and heads north to Long Road. In the vicinity of the intersection of Long Road with Mill Road there is an extensive grove of grass trees.
Approaching Grimwade the correct route is directly across Grimwade Road and not a dog leg as shown on many maps. The direct route leads to the very popular Grimwade camping area. The track through the camping area curves through pine plantations to eventually join up with Lowden-Grimwade Road. However, a right turn on Grimwade Road (before the camping area) and then a left onto Lowden-Grimwade Road is an easier but less interesting drive.
From the hamlet of Lowden, Ferguson Road will lead you north to the beautiful Ferguson Valley. Great views on the left not far north of Lowden.
At a major roundabout 11 kilometres to the north on Ferguson Road is the quirky Gnomesville tourist attraction.
A small diversion allowed us to get in a bit of four wheel driving.
From here the route is north on Wellington Mill Road to a right turn onto King Jarrah Road. Two kilometres along this road is the carpark for the 500 year old King Jarrah Tree. This venerable giant is one of several like-named Eucalyptus marginata (at Dwellingup, Manjimup, and Sawyers Valley) in the Northern Jarrah Forest of Western Australia.
The route continues along King Jarrah Road to Pile Road and then, after 13 kilometres, turn right onto spectacularly beautiful Henty Road.
This scenic drive leads to the South Western Highway and the end of the Road Trip.
The Road Trip to plot this track took place in late October.
111 kilometres.
