Day 18 Katherine to Gunlom Falls

Today we are going to Kakadu!

Tammy writes:

Early morning in Katherine and this is the largest population of people that we have seen since we have been ‘on the road’.

So many people lining the streets as an oversized load is moving through town. It is almost as if there is a parade – preceded by a police escort that looks more like the pace car at the Indy 500. I for one can feel the excitement and maybe a little nervous anticipation as it is pretty spectacular to see this oversized load being transported. It was worth stopping and watching.

Tammy writes:

Anybody ready for a dip? The beautiful, natural pools and refreshing, cascading falls are major part of the experience of the Northern Territory.

We are off to Kakadu National Park. This is so exciting! And yet, it is making me feel a little apprehensive. Kakadu is home to 10,000 crocodiles – a tenth of all the crocs in the Northern Territory (Yipes!).

We are starting this part of our adventure with a hike to the top of the Gunlom Falls. We can’t let a few crocs stop us from taking a much-needed, refreshing dip into the cool infinity pool at the top. Look at that view!

Day 19 Gunlom Falls to Yellow Water

Day 20 Yellow Water to Darwin

Yellow Water is part of the South Alligator River floodplain and is one of the premier attractions of Kakadu.

From Yellow Water we travelled to Jabiru and then Ubirr to see the world famous, aboriginal rock art.

The Arnhem Highway took us through Marrakai and Humpty Doo to Darwin. Finding a vacancy at a caravan park was difficult and soaked up a fair bit of time.

Two nights in the Top End capital gave us the chance to ‘catch our breath’ and allowed Tammy time for some retail therapy.
