Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (KTW), also known as Bang Sue Grand Station, is the primary long-distance railway hub in Bangkok, and since 2023 has served as the main departure and arrival point for most intercity trains. While some local trains still operate from Hua Lamphong Station (the former Bangkok train hub), the majority of long-distance services, including those to Ban Pong, now depart from KTW.
The journey from KTW to Ban Pong, typically takes approximately 1 hour 50 minutes. The train route from KTW to Ban Pong is part of the broader network that connects Bangkok with destinations in central and western Thailand, including Hua Hin and Chumphon.
It is important to note that although Thai trains are rarely on time, often accumulating delays, they depart on schedule from the origin city. So, ensure that you are on time at KTW – the departure point.
The railway out of Bangkok splits near Ban Pong – north-east to Tanon Songpol Station and south to Ban Pong Station.
Express and Rapid Trains from KTW to Ban Pong and further south arrive at Ban Pong.
However, trains from KTW to Ban Pong may arrive at Tanon Songpol Station, which is the designated stop for trains travelling from Bangkok/Hua Lamphong Station (i.e. not KTW) to Kanchanaburi (but listed as stopping at Ban Pong). This is probably because both stations are in Ban Pong town – see above – and T.I.T. (This is Thailand).
Should you arrive at Tanon Songpol – get off the train. When you arrive in Ban Pong – get off the train.
