Jaffa is the southern part of what since 1950 has been known as Tel Aviv-Jaffa.

With its commanding views over its natural harbour it was of historical, strategic military importance.

Archaeological evidence shows that Jaffa was inhabited roughly 7,500 years BCE. Old Jaffa is an interesting maze of steps, alleys, plazas, mosques, churches and private dwellings.

It was Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, September 2012.
No cars are allowed on the streets during this time and it gives pedestrians and cyclists the opportunity to walk, ride and wander at will. Being in a nearly-deserted city is an eerie feeling.
