Satellite technology enables real time tracking of road trips, expeditions and overland journeys. Industry uses the same technology to track cargo, vehicles and other mobile assets.
The mainstream tracking tools are ExplorOz Tracker, Garmin inReach, SPOT, Trackleaders, and SpotWalla. They are built for safety/position sharing, not visual storytelling.
Across Australia has secured access to Trip Lapse Live — a private App that combines real time GPS tracking with a photograph taken every thirty seconds, uploaded via Starlink and viewable online as it happens. Playback speed is selectable at one, three, eight, or 24 frames per second, turning the raw feed into a genuine time lapse record of the Road Trip.
This tracker is not a ‘me-too tool’. It’s a distinct offering with a genuine point of difference from mainstream trackers that has the potential to revolutionise the way 4WD and Overlanding Road Trips are recorded and reported on.
A 30-second photo-upload tracker is only realistically possible on Starlink — Iridium and Globalstar (Garmin inReach, SPOT) don’t have the bandwidth for image transfer at that rate/frequency.
