The knowledge, skills and expertise among the team is sufficient to overcome most mechanical issues. Catastrophic issues that prevent a vehicle continuing with the Expedition and requiring recovery present a logistical challenge that is exacerbated by the area of operations. This has the potential to be very expensive.

Recovery Cost Assessment

Recovery-cost assessment:

  1. Quantifies the financial risk of the expedition.
  2. Helps justify insurance, contingency funds, and recovery memberships.

Recovery costs could easily exceed the value of one of the vehicles if a major failure occurs in a remote section.

High-Risk Recovery Zones

Carnegie to Warburton

Approximately 490 km of remote travel with limited traffic and few recovery assets available. Recovery costs exceeding $10,000 are possible for a disabled vehicle requiring specialist transport.

Simpson Desert Crossing

The Mt Dare–Birdsville crossing is the most significant recovery risk on the expedition. Vehicle extraction from the French Line or QAA Line may require specialist recovery operators and multiple days of travel. Costs of $10,000–15,000 should be considered possible.

Because the vehicles are older Suzukis, the most likely recovery trigger is not engine failure but a driveline, wheel bearing, cooling system, clutch, or suspension failure. Concentrating on these items in the preparation of the vehicles will reduce the probability of a $10,000 recovery more effectively than any insurance policy.
