This Communications Plan is part of the Across Australia Expedition Plan and the Operations Plan.

Starlink	Remote communications and emergency support
Satphone	Remote communications and emergency support

Starlink is the bandwidth workhorse for content and general connectivity. The Sat Phone is designed for scheduled calls in remote areas and given 100% uptime service with Starlink its primary role would be as a backup.

11.1 UHF CB Radio

• 5 W UHF radio installed in each vehicle.
• Second 5W radio scanning.
• 5 W handheld UHF radio in each vehicle.
• Channel 10 will be used throughout the Road Trip. It is a long-established convention for travellers crossing the Simpson Desert to use channel 10.

11.2 Mobile Phone

Although connectivity is absent for much of the route outside populated places, the use of mobile phones is still the preferred method of communication after UHF radio.

11.3 Starlink

Starlink satellite internet is the communications platform that will be used for contact outside the Expedition when mobile coverage is not available in remote locations. Starlink provides broadband for content uploads, social media, weather and road condition research, voice and video calls, and emergency communications support. The Starlink Roam plan allows use while travelling.

11.4 Satellite Phone

The Satphone is a part of the Expedition’s communications redundancy. Starlink, UHF, and the Satphone are the three independent systems behind the “no single point of failure” communications strategy, and requires it be tested before departure and checked daily alongside Starlink and UHF.

The Satphone is owned by Scott and will be tested and updated before departure.

11.5 Optional Devices

Depending on budget constraints, the following devices may be carried:

• GME MT610G PLB
• Garmin inReach

Communication Procedures

The radio check on departure is conducted by Comms Officer.

Each person to carry a handheld UHF radio on excursions outside vehicles.

Loss of visual contact with vehicle

• UHF call.
• Return to last known position.

Recharging

Each vehicle has been set up so it is capable of recharging handheld radios.

The Comms Officer is responsible for ensuring the recharging procedure is effected each evening.

Spares

The Comms Officer will carry two spare handheld radios.

Modern 5w handheld radios perform as adequately as vehicle mounted radios in a convoy scenario.
