Itinerary

To the Start

Depart Perth and stop overnight at Galena.

The convoy moves north, refuels at Overlander Roadhouse and continues to Shelter Bay. Camping accommodation (fees payable) is available at Shelter Bay, seven kilometres distant from Steep Point, and while difficult to secure it is not impossible – particularly 12 months out. The Team will spend two nights/one day at Shelter Bay in prep for the start.

To Alice Springs

The biggest challenge of the Expedition is remoteness and the first example of this is at the Start Point.

The Gunbarrel Highway is most difficult part of this sector. Remote, rough and a reputation as a vehicle breaker. This iconic outback track  leads to the Great Central Road.

The ongoing sealing of this road (part of Australia’s longest shortcut) does not detract from it being a great outback drive.

Permits are required to traverse the Gunbarrel Highway and GCR.

The GCR leads to Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and Uluru viewing opportunities before camping overnight at Yulara.

From Yulara access Kings Canyon and then Finke Gorge National Park and Palm Valley to Hermannsburg. Passes required.

Alice Springs

Revictualise, refuel and refresh.

Head south out of Alice Springs on Stuart Highway to Erldunda and turn east at Kulgera towards Finke.

After Alice Springs

On the way to Finke we’ll deviate north to the Lambert Centre – the geographic and gravitational centre of Australia.

Continue to Finke (Apatula) and then to Mt Dare to refuel for the Simpson Desert crossing.  South of Mt Dare is the iconic Dalhousie Springs – the kick off point for the Simpson Desert.

A 12 month Desert Parks Pass is required.

The time and distance figures show the desert crossing needs at least four days/three nights.

After the Simpson Desert trip head east to Haddon Corner and stay overnight at Innamincka. Drive south to Cameron Corner (passes required) and on to Tibooburra and White Cliffs. Then follow the Darling River from Wilcannia to Tilpa, Louth, Bourke, Brewarrina, Walgett, Collarenebri, and Mungindi to Goondiwindi. A one day run to Cape Byron.

Return to Across Australia.
