This Catering Plan is part of the Across Australia Expedition Plan and the Operations Plan.

The provision of healthy, nutritious and satisfying meals at regular times is considered of such importance on an extended venture such as Across Australia that the option to provide a dedicated cook as a part of the team has been included as an alternative to self catering.

Group Catering Option

Meals

Dinner each night will be prepared by Mike for everyone. Rationale is that Cliff and Scott will be working on vehicles, Greg will be preparing camp, checking comms and assisting Cliff and Scott, Kim will be preparing the next day’s route/activities and working on the diary of the day’s activities just done. This strategy uses less water in washing up, uses less gas in cooking and provides better, higher standard meals for all participants.

Participants will prepare their own breakfast and lunch.

Cooking

Single burner butane stoves using butane canisters will be used to cook the evening meal every second night. The issue of butane stoves not working in cold weather should not arise because the butane stoves will used only at night and not in the morning when it is much colder.

Evening meal preparation will use butane stoves, frypans and other kitchen utensils. Each other night a barbecue plate with folding legs will be used – subject to fires allowed to be lighted.

No cooked breakfasts or lunch.

Should hot water be required at breakfast and/or lunch two Jetboils are available.

Utensils/Cooking Equipment

Each participant needs a plate, bowl, spoon, knife, fork, spoon, butane gas stove.

Group equipment required includes fridges, tables, windbreak, pans, pots, spatula, cutting board, paper towels, kitchen knives, washing up bowl, detergent, scourers, condiments, billy.

Self Catering Option

Participants provide their equipment and food and prepare their own meals.

Decision on Option

There is no urgency to decide on this arrangement. A decision will be made three months before departure if not decided earlier.
